PSF and DSF Membership Application Links
The Python Software Foundation and the Django Software Foundation both have notions of “memberships” that allow people to vote in their organizations’ respective board elections (and may include other benefits). I regularly reference my own Mastodon posts and browser history (and have even committed a link or two to memory) to share these links with folks, so this post exists to allow me to link to them all at once.
PSF Membership
There are several different types of PSF Membership, but the two that are relevant to this post (below) are the ones that take just a minute or two to sign up for and are self-service.
-
Supporting Membership – This membership allows you to vote in PSF board elections and requires that you make an annual monetary donation to the organization. The default donation amount is $99, but that can be as low as $25 with their sliding scale option.
-
Contributing / Managing Membership – This is a self-certified membership type for folks who do community and / or technical work that benefits the Python language. If you’re an open source contributor, community organizer, or someone else of the sort, this option is for you. You’ll need to fill out some basic personal info, mention what projects or communities you work in, and choose a membership type. (The options for membership type on this form at the time of this post are “managing” or “contributing” – pick “contributing”, as they were recently merged into the same type in this year’s election cycle.)
There is also a Basic membership, which does not grant voting rights and a Fellowship membership, which I recently wrote about here.
DSF Membership
DSF membership requires a nomination form (self-nominations are allowed, see the Individual Members page and FAQ for more information) rather than a self-certification form. I’m not as familiar with DSF membership as I am with PSF membership, but I believe this form is similar in spirit to the PSF Contributing / Managing form even if it requires a bit more verbosity and verification.
If you’re reading this post, you’re probably active within these communities and work with these technologies. I encourage you to become a member and participate in their elections. I also encourage you (or better yet, your company or employer) to support them financially via PSF sponsorship and DSF corporate membership while you’re at it.
